Pauillac is the appellation of 1er Grands Crus Classés since 3 of the 5 châteaux having obtained this supreme title are classified there. Located south of Saint-Estèphe and north of Saint Julien, the wines of the appellation are rich, fruity, complex and powerful.
Margaux is the largest of the Médoc appellations, in terms of size and volume of wines produced. It is also the eponymous appellation of the last of the 1er Grands Crus Classés du Médoc: the famous Château Margaux. Margaux wines bear their name very well, they are recognized by specialists as the most delicate and feminine wines of the Médoc.
Located on the right bank of the Gironde estuary, in Libourne, Saint-Émilion is a name famous for its wines and its monolithic church. The village and its surroundings were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. The vineyards of Saint-Emilion are at the origin of great red wines made from the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc grape varieties. The red wines are classified into four appellations: St Emilion, St Emilion Grand Cru, St Emilion Grand Cru Classé and St Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé. This classification is renewed every ten years, unlike the classification of Médoc wines, which has been unchanged since 1855.
Located south of Pauillac, Saint Julien is the smallest of the Médoc's municipal appellations. The appellation is made up of 11 Grands Crus Classés (5 seconds, 2 third and 4 fourth). The wines of Saint Julien are distinguished by their complexity and the finesse of their aromas. The greatest wine lovers are also accustomed to saying that there are no small wines in Saint Julien.
Pomerol is one of the smallest Gironde appellations located north of Saint-Emilion. Pomerol's properties produce exclusively red wines dominated by Merlot. Some wines of the appellation have the particularity of being single varietal and therefore made only from Merlot. The appellation has a total of 140 properties with an average surface area of 6 hectares.
The Pessac-Léognan appellation bears the stamp of a unique terroir. An exceptional combination of soil and vines, the expression of these chosen grape varieties, Cabernet-Sauvignon and Merlot. Pessac-Léognan The first one develops perfectly in these gravelly soils its powerful and complex personality offering red wines a dark colour, a powerful structure with firm tannins, an incomparable aptitude for ageing. Pessac-Léognan The second, Merlot, compensates, in the blends, for the rigour of Cabernet-Sauvignon thanks to its roundness and developed fruitiness and brings suppleness.
Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost appellation in the Médoc. Its wines are the most colourful, robust and tannic in the Médoc. They mature much later than those of other communal appellations.
